World Schizophrenia Day 2023

May 24th marks World Schizophrenia Day. World Schizophrenia Day aims to raise public awareness about schizophrenia and shine light on the greater-than-24-million people around the world affected by this devastating condition.

Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder that affects less than one percent of the US population. Active symptoms can include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, trouble with thinking, and lack of motivation. Schizophrenia typically manifests in patients in their early 20s. There is currently no definitive cause or cure for the disorder; however, experts continue to conduct focused research through genetic and behavioral research to advance our ability to provide care. Additionally, advanced brain imaging and the progression of the study of the brain’s structure and functions hold promise for new, more effective therapies.

While great strides are being made in the scientific and medical community that benefit Schizophrenia patients, misconceptions about the condition can cause psychosocial challenges for individuals living with it by way of interactions with people that lack a basic understanding of its effects. Unfortunately, treatments and diagnosis can be complicated, and some patients do struggle to obtain life-altering treatment. But contrary to some misperceptions, many patients can experience a high quality of life with proper medications and therapies that reduce psychotic symptoms and their severity.

World Schizophrenia Day aims to reduce stigmas around Schizophrenia and to highlight the ability for those affected to lead normal, happy lives with the proper care. At RareMed, World Schizophrenia Day hits especially close, as some of our patient support teams work very closely with this patient population, striving to provide care for this under supported group of people.

Like any chronic illness, support and care is of the utmost importance for those affected with Schizophrenia. There are many organizations that provide resources and support to those affected, including the Schizophrenia & Psychosis Action Alliance, Mental Health America (MHA), and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
